Aptos Creek Road

A Complete Street not yet complete

In February 2021 a small group of residents began meeting with State Park officials to address safety issues along the entrance road to The Forest of Nisene Marks State Park.

This spurred the formation of Nisene Rio Gateway.

Since then, State Parks have installed new signs, revamped the entrance station, and re-paved part of the entrance road. Through dedication & attention, State Parks has responded to the community’s pleas!

Now State Parks needs community support to complete the vision.

The trails & entrance booth of Nisene Marks are a mere half mile from Aptos Village, easily within walking distance. NRG will be developing the interim Gateway Park, which adjoins the Village and greets visitors along Aptos Creek Road.

Redevelopment of Aptos Creek Road will connect Aptos’ historic & newly redeveloped community core to the splendor of our recovering redwood forest through an accessible Park & Trail Network.

Sounds great, right?! Only problem is that despite California’s large budget surplus, the State doesn’t just dole out that money to all agencies in need. Aside from the general shoestring budget of State Parks, the agency is working locally on recovery from the devastating CZU fire in 2020 that wiped out Big Basin State Park. There is a massive effort to rebuild & reimagine Big Basin, and NRG has no intent to divert resources from that vital process.

If Aptos wants safer access to The Forest of Nisene Marks, Aptos will need to help State Parks.

NRG, State Parks, and Friends are collaborating on a grant opportunity with Community Foundation.

If awarded, this grant will provide the funding to reimagine The Gateway To The Forest Of Nisene Marks as a safer and more enjoyable experience for all visitors, not just those behind the wheel.
